Running Vanilla Minecraft is easy. Running a 300+ modpack like All The Mods or Better MC is a completely different beast. Modpacks inject thousands of new items, complex machinery, and crazy terrain generation that will bring an unoptimized server to its knees.

Crucial Rule: Modded servers leak memory over time much faster than plugin servers. Scheduled daily restarts are strictly mandatory for large modpacks!

1. Hardware Requirements

You cannot run a heavy modpack on budget hardware.

  • CPU Power: Modpacks calculate insane amounts of math every tick (pipes moving items, cables transferring power). You need high single-core performance. CPUs like the Ryzen 9 series are essential.
  • Storage: Fast NVMe storage is required. Traditional HDDs will freeze your server during chunk generation.
  • RAM: A 200+ modpack needs a minimum of 8GB to start, and often 10GB-12GB to run smoothly with players. Check our RAM Calculator for specifics.

2. Choosing the Right Software

  • Forge: The heavy-duty titan. Has the most complex and robust mods, but consumes the most RAM and takes the longest to boot.
  • Fabric: Extremely lightweight and fast. Better TPS and faster startup times, but lacks some legacy heavy-tech mods.

Pro Tip: If your modpack offers a server pack (a ZIP file specifically for servers), ALWAYS use it. Do not just copy your client mods folder to the server, as client-side mods (like minimaps or GUI tweaks) will crash the server instantly.

3. JVM Flags & Optimization

Modpacks require aggressive memory management. You must use optimized Java startup flags (like Aikar's Flags) to tune the Garbage Collector.

Additionally, install server-side performance mods:

  • For Forge: FerriteCore (Memory optimizer), Spark (Profiler), and AI Improvements.
  • For Fabric: Lithium (General physics/AI optimization), Krypton (Network optimization).
