/give @p minecraft:white_bannerHow to Make a Minecraft Banner
Banners in Minecraft are highly customizable decorative blocks that can be placed on the ground, hung on walls, or even applied to shields. To create custom designs, you'll need to use a Loom, which is far more efficient than the old crafting table method and requires only one dye per pattern layer.
How Banner Patterns Work
Banners are built using a system of layers. You start with a base color (e.g., a White Banner) and apply patterns on top of it using dyes. Because patterns are layered, the order in which you apply them matters significantly. A yellow circle applied before a red cross will look entirely different than a red cross applied before a yellow circle.
How to Layer Banner Patterns
In standard survival Minecraft, you are limited to a maximum of 6 pattern layers per banner. If you are playing on Java Edition and have admin privileges, you can bypass this limit and apply up to 16 layers by using the `/give` command generator provided in this tool.
Java vs Bedrock Banners
While the Loom mechanics are nearly identical across both editions, there are two major differences:
- Commands: Java Edition allows you to spawn complex banners using NBT/Component data in the `/give` command. Bedrock Edition does not support this feature.
- Bleaching: Bedrock Edition includes an exclusive feature allowing you to use Bleach (via the Education Edition toggle) to wipe a banner clean.
Special Banner Patterns
While most geometric patterns (stripes, crosses, borders) only require dye, "Special" patterns require a physical Banner Pattern item to be placed in the Loom alongside the dye and banner. Examples include the Creeper Charge (crafted with a Creeper Head), the Skull Charge (Wither Skeleton Skull), and the Snout pattern (found in Bastion Remnants).
How to Use the Generated Banner Command
If you are running a modern Java Edition server (version 1.20.5 or newer), the command syntax has changed from NBT tags to Item Components. Our generator uses the exact minecraft:banner_patterns=[...] syntax required for these modern versions. Simply copy the command from the output box and paste it into your server console or in-game chat window (if you have operator permissions).
