Our active locations are Miami and Dallas in the United States, which suit players across North America and Latin America. Players in Europe can connect, but ping will be higher than on a server hosted in Europe.
Pick the RAM your server needs
Every plan runs on the same Minecraft Java infrastructure, so the only choice is memory. You can start small and upgrade the plan as your server grows.
Why run Paper instead of Vanilla or Spigot
Paper is the server software most Minecraft Java communities use today. It keeps Vanilla gameplay while removing a lot of wasted work on every tick.
Better tick performance
Paper optimises chunk loading, entity ticking, lighting and hoppers, so the same hardware stays closer to 20 TPS with more players online.
The biggest plugin ecosystem
Paper runs Bukkit and Spigot plugins plus Paper-only plugins. Staples like LuckPerms, EssentialsX, WorldEdit, WorldGuard, Vault and CoreProtect are built with Paper in mind.
Exploit and bug fixes
Paper patches common duplication glitches and Vanilla bugs. Behaviour that some farms rely on can be switched back on in the configuration.
Per-world tuning
paper-global.yml and paper-world-defaults.yml let you control entity limits, despawn ranges, view and simulation distance and redstone behaviour per world.
Paper, Purpur or Spigot?
All three run the same plugin API, so you can change your mind later. The difference is how much performance work and how many extra options you get.
| Paper | Purpur | Spigot | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built on | Spigot | Paper | CraftBukkit |
| Plugins | Bukkit, Spigot and Paper plugins | Everything Paper runs, plus the Purpur API | Bukkit and Spigot plugins |
| Performance work | Extensive — the default choice | Inherits Paper’s optimisations | Basic |
| Extra gameplay options | Few — stays close to Vanilla | Hundreds of toggles in purpur.yml (rideable mobs, mechanic tweaks) | Few |
| Best for | Most survival, SMP and minigame servers | Servers that want to customise gameplay without extra plugins | Legacy setups that specifically require it |

TPS, MSPT and what actually causes lag
Minecraft runs at 20 ticks per second, which gives every tick a 50 ms budget. When MSPT (milliseconds per tick) goes above 50, TPS drops and players feel rubber-banding and delayed block breaking. On Paper you can check both with /tps and /mspt, and recent Paper builds bundle the spark profiler to show which plugin, entity or chunk is using the tick.
Most of a Minecraft server’s work happens on a single main thread, so clock speed per core matters more than core count. That is why our Minecraft nodes use AMD Ryzen 9 processors. Paste your numbers into the TPS & MSPT calculator or your latest.log into the server log analyzer to see whether you are CPU-bound, short on memory or fighting a single plugin.
Pre-generating the world with a plugin such as Chunky and lowering simulation-distance usually removes most lag spikes caused by exploration. Our Minecraft lag guide walks through the full checklist.
How much RAM does a Paper server need?
Paper uses memory mainly for loaded chunks, entities and plugin data. These are sensible starting points:
| Server | Suggested RAM | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Friends SMP · 1–5 players · light plugins | 2–4 GB | View distance and world size |
| Community survival · 5–20 players | 4–6 GB | Claims, logging and map plugins add up |
| Busy SMP or minigames · 20–40 players | 6–8 GB | Entity counts and farms; pre-generate the world |
| Large public server · 40+ players | 8–10 GB | Consider splitting worlds or modes across servers behind a BungeeCord proxy |
These are estimates, not guarantees. The RAM calculator gives a number for your exact plugins and player count, and the RAM guide explains why more RAM does not fix CPU lag.
Minecraft versions and Java
Pick the Paper build that matches your plugins. Each Minecraft version needs a matching Java runtime:
| Minecraft version | Java | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 1.20.5 and newer | Java 21 or newer | Current Paper and Purpur releases |
| 1.18 – 1.20.4 | Java 17 | Servers pinned to older plugin versions |
| 1.17 | Java 16 | Rarely used today |
| 1.8 – 1.16.5 | Java 8 or 11 | Legacy PvP and older plugin sets |
If a plugin refuses to load after a version change, the log analyzer flags Java version mismatches and missing dependencies.
Move an existing Paper, Purpur or Spigot server
Back up the old server
Stop it and download the world folders (world, world_nether, world_the_end), the plugins folder and your config files.
Order a plan and choose Paper or Purpur
Size the plan with the RAM table above. Select the same Minecraft version you were running before updating anything.
Upload your files
Use the file manager or an FTP client and keep the same folder structure. Plugin data lives inside each plugin’s folder, so it moves with it.
Start and verify
Check the console for plugin errors, then update your domain or share the new address. If something does not start, contact support by ticket or Discord.
What Paper and Purpur hosting is good for
Survival SMP with friends
A small plan with a few quality-of-life plugins, automated backups and a world that stays online when you log off.
Community and Towny servers
Permissions, economy, land claims and logging with LuckPerms, Vault, Towny or GriefPrevention and CoreProtect.
Minigames and lobbies
Run game modes on separate servers and connect them with a BungeeCord proxy, which is also available as a server type.
Java and Bedrock crossplay
Install the Geyser and Floodgate plugins on Paper so Bedrock players on mobile, console and Windows can join your Java server. Need Bedrock only? See Bedrock hosting.
